Family Connections

Purpose: To explore strategies that support and empower families through respectful and reciprocal relationships.

EACH STUDENT WILL COMPLETE THE “WELCOME LETTER”

· Welcome Letter (Typed and Double Spaced) (20 points)

Imagine you were a parent preparing for your child’s first preschool experience. What messages would you want to hear from your child’s school/teacher?

Paragraph 1

· Introduce yourself (including your background, interests, and knowledge of early childhood education). This should provide a personal, yet professional, sense of who you are as their child’s teacher. (3 points)

Paragraph 2 (This is the focus of your letter!)

· Describe your approach to working with families:

· Define your view of a family centered approach and describe why it is important. (3 points)

· How do children, families, and educators benefit from this type of approach? (3 points)

· What are your beliefs about including diverse families? (3 points)

· What are your beliefs about building community with individual families and among families? (3 points)

· Why is a partnership with families important to you? (3 points)

Paragraph 3

· Closing statements regarding your hopes for the school year. (2 points)

· Do not use “fancy fonts” or specialized notepaper. This should be a standard and professional letter.

· Your letter must be free of grammatical and spelling errors or you will lose points.
