Chapter One introduces the research project from a general perspective and narrows down to the specific issue under study. It highlights the background of the study, including the history of the research topic is under concern. It gives a brief highlight of the contribution of social work practice about successful intervention on people with hoarding and cluttering behaviour. This chapter introduces the critical issues to be discussed throughout the research project. It includes the research objective, which is to find out the impact or contribution of social workers to effective intervention to hoarding in older adults. The chapter briefs about the thesis and highlights the targeted audience, the research methodology, and the limitations of the study. It introduces the two terms under concern, which are hoarding and social work practice, and briefs on how they relate with each other. Generally, this chapter introduces the research work from a broad and general perspective and narrows down to the specific objective of the research.

Chapter Three explains the hoarding and social work practice. It explores on hoarding among older adults and the causes of this kind of behaviour. This chapter will examine the various risks which hoarders are exposed to, namely, the fire-related and environmental risks as well as health-related perils. The section also discusses how hoarders are likely to expose themselves to higher levels of these hazards and the factors which determine the level of risk one is exposed to. Additionally, the chapter discusses the various social practice services provided in relation to hoarding.

Chapter Four presents social work practice in the United Kingdom. It explores the various social work practice agencies in the U.K. and the services they provide to hoarders. Each of the social work practices will be discussed in detail in regards to their usefulness and effectiveness to hoarders. The chapter also discusses the relevant laws applicable to the hoarding and cluttering conditions. The chapter further discusses how the rules put in place contribute to successful intervention to hoarding. It also discusses the limitations set by the laws concerning the extent to which the social worker is allowed to act in dealing with hoarder’s items. The chapter explicitly examines the intervention measures placed by social worker service providers in the U.K., such as the London Fire Brigade, and their contribution to reducing the level of risks exposed to hoarders. The skills and level of expertise required by a social worker are also discussed along with the scope of the services offered by the social worker. The chapter also examines the contribution of the social work services in people with hoarding behaviours as well as the challenges and limitations hindering effective social work services provision to hoarders.
