Task Summary
This assessment task aims to consolidate your knowledge about the legal and ethical standards of chronic care management and the implications of such standards on the development of the therapeutic relationship.
Please note this assessment task (1A) is the first of three tasks associated with assessment 1. Assessment 1B will be a reflective writing piece and assessment 1C the development of a care plan.
For this individual assessment, you have been given a hypothetical case study of a patient suffering from a chronic condition (see Appendix 1). You are required to analyse the ethical and legal aspects of the care principles and therapeutic relationships relevant to this case study.
Context
Throughout your Bachelor of Nursing Degree, you will be learning biological and medical facts underpinning treatment and clinical action. There are many other important perspectives on chronic illness and the way it is experienced, diagnosed and treated. This assignment provides an opportunity for you to examine one hypothetical case study in some detail of a patient with a chronic illness.
This assessment task provides you the opportunity to integrate practice and theory and to increase your knowledge of legal and ethical standards associated with providing care to a patient diagnosed with a chronic condition. Additionally, you will source appropriate references, communicate your knowledge effectively and improve your academic skills.
Task Instructions
To complete this assessment task, address the following, with reference to evidence from course material as well as independent research:
- What is ‘medical paternalism’ and how does it apply to the clinical care of the patient in the case
- Discuss obtaining informed consent from the patient in this case study, and how you would maintain patient autonomy, privacy and confidentiality as a Registered
