The homeless and marginalized had been paramount in Alan Facey’s mind for the past 15 years. As director of finance and administration for the Calgary Drop-In & Rehab Centre (the DI), he exercised “management by walking around,” leaving his sixth-floor office daily to mingle with staff as well as the street-involved clients who rotated through the facility. He measured success by the DI’s ability to serve others in times of need through offering community and relationship to those suffering or in trauma. “People gravitate towards a safe hub,” he said, “and that’s us.”

A balance sheet shows what money has previously been spent on a daily, weekly, monthly or yearly basis along with future payments and it shows what money has been credited to the account. It also shows anything that an organization owns or controls such as properties, equipment, securities, prepaid expenses and inventory. Assets can be used right away and later which can be cash or stocks, but stocks or securities that are used long term are more likely to be goods instead of currency. Liabilities are included as well, which can include loans, income taxes that have to be payed and wages. Liabilities can also be broken down on a balance sheet where they are used for short and long term.

Brain development in the first two years of life is fascinating and awe-inspiring. Most of the physical growth of the brain occurs during the first two years of life. Neuroscience has shed light on the development of neurons and the cerebral cortex in particular. At birth, infants have approximately one hundred billion neurons. Relatively few neurons will be produced after birth. The newborn’s neurons are connected only tentatively. In the first years, essential connections between neurons form. Combined with understanding sensitive periods and the role of the environment, we have a much clearer picture of what is happening in the infant and toddler brain today than ever before.

The religious community often debates on whether Buddhism is categorized as a religion or as philosophical teaching. The answer to the question varies depending on an individual’s point of view. There are three main types of Buddhism practices across the world with each of them having smaller branches with slights variances in their teachings and beliefs. The different styles of Buddhist mainly encompass Theravada Buddhism, Vajrayana Buddhism, and Mahayana Buddhism. The various forms often have deities that are worshipped while others do not. Diversity manifests itself in two aspects, primary and secondary. The former dwells on easily discernible dimensions such as gender, age, physical capacity or incapacity and race to some extent as these are the easily noted differences that can be picked on the initial encounter. On the other hand, secondary aspects dwell on matters that only become noticeable after an extended period of interaction and exposure to the individual and include dimensions such as religion, levels of education, racial bias and income levels. This therefore accentuates the view that in any work setting, every individual is unique in his own way, but also shares numerous characteristics with other employees, which may vary from biological to environmental components.
